Tappan Zee is a natural widening of the Hudson River in southeastern New York. It stretches about 10 miles (16 km) along the boundary between Rockland and Westchester counties1 and is about 3 miles (4.8 km) wide at its broadest point. I visited as a tourist.
The area is known for its scenic beauty, with high steep bluffs of the Palisades on the western side and communities like Nyack, Ossining, and Tarrytown along its banks. The Tappan Zee is famous for the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, which spans the river and connects Rockland and Westchester counties.
